What is CSSF?
The Association of Yale Alumni Community Service Summer Fellowship program was initiated in the fall of 1989 to provide students with the opportunity to immerse themselves in full time, community service work during the summer months.
The Fellowship places undergraduate and graduate/professional students in paid eight-to-ten-week, community service positions in cities across the country and abroad. Since its inception, close to four hundred students have taken part in the program.
Who is eligible for the program?
Current undergraduate and graduate/professional students who are not in their final year of study are eligible to apply. However, students in their final year who are specifically interested in community service careers may be considered.
Do I get to choose the location and the work site?
The program is coordinated in partnership with Yale Club/Associations, which are responsible for selecting a non-profit, direct service work agency, raising funds for the stipend, and providing housing. A list of worksites/placement opportunities will be made available to applicants. Students will be able to note their preferences, however, applicants should be committed to community servie and are asked to apply to the program and not to a site.
Will I receive a stipend?
Yes, each Fellow will receive a $2800 stipend contributed by the Yale Club/Association or by Yale College Classes or individual alumni. This stipend also qualifies students who are on Yale gift aid for the Summer Waiver Award program.
Will housing be provided?
Yes, the Yale Club/Associations provide housing for the Fellow. Housing provisions may be made in a variety of ways: by placing a Fellow with a Yale affiliated family, housing the Fellow at the work site, or in some cases-with other interns off site. As representatives of the program and the University, Fellows are expected to conduct themselves in a responsible manner, to be considerate and respectful of their hosts.
Are meals also included?
While Fellows living with families or on-site may have the opportunity to be included in meals, it should not be expected. The Fellow is responsible for all personal expenses incurred.
Are there any requirements for the Fellowship?
